I’ve heard that living in Aurora is like living in a bubble. I think that means that we are isolated or insulated from the some of the world. It that true? What are some of the good things about living in Aurora? Is it the low taxes? The greenspace? The lack of traffic congestion? The short lines at the Post Office or banks? The small town attitude and atmosphere?
The “Bubble” used to refer to how the kids were still able to remain somewhat sheltered from the nuthouse that tends to be the rest of the world. I first heard the term used in the early 80’s as those who’d gone to college came back and told the rest of us the kind of crazy things that went on at other high schools around the country. It wasn’t derogatory at all, we were all told to enjoy the bubble effect as long as we could because the rest of the world was stark raving mad. Of course this was pre-internet so the bubble isn’t what it used to be.
When I grew up here you could count the number of “housing developments” on one hand. By developments I mean places like Walden, Chatham, Four Seasons and the Highlands. Now it seems like there are too many to keep track of.
I wouldn’t neccessarily agree that the taxes are low, you might consider them low compared to other cities but when there are seniors and folks on fixed incomes having to consider selling their homes they’ve owned forever because the taxes are creeping up I would take issue witht he term “low”.
That aside there are a lot of great things about the city. The Police and Fire departments are excellent in my opinion.
Despite the rapid growth recently the city still has managed to maintain somewhat of a small town feel.
The parks and greenspace are an incredible asset and the city has done a good job of purchasing large tracts to prevent their development.
We’ve got some top notch golf courses here which is great despite the fact that most of us can’t play them.
The pluses still substantially outweigh the minuses and if the streetscape project comes to pass it’d be an amazing plus in my opinion. Of course I thought that about the clock tower too so obviously I’m in the minority in some views.
