The original Our Lady of Perpetual Help church building seems headed for demolition. Seems that maintenance costs are too high for the catholic church. The building was moved here from Solon in the ’50s where it was also St. Rita’s church. Is nothing sacred?

The Aurora Co-op Nursery School currently leases and the building, they are searching for a new location. The most likely location is out of Aurora. Other community groups also use the building.

Catholic church running out of money? Is St. Peter’s next?

Demolition for Oliver Hall??? Could be just a rumor.
Yes, the co-op will have to find a new location but this is because the building is not ADA compliant and for the lease to continue it must meet ADA standards. To retrofit Handicap bathrooms and an elevator to that building just so a preschool can stay is not cost effective.

ADA complience is often used to facilitate a predtermined agenda. Just like “liability” is often used.

This building could be Landmarked and compliance would be phased in or not at all.

The building meets the criteria for Landmarking by the City Landmark commission.

City Hall is not ADA compliant. Many other buildings are not ADA compliant.

This is a co-op of parents, not a public group.

Please contact any member of the Aurora Landmark Commission at 562-6131 for more information.

I’ve just checked the ADA manual and exsisting buildings have many exemptions. It is here
To just say the building isn’t ADA, it should be torn down ought to get you a seat in the confessional.

  5. fpminc says:

Whether or not the building could be exempt from ADA still doesn’t make it safe for the children, also a concern, AND it doesn’t confirm a rumor that it IS being torn down. I think that this matter is between the Aurora C0-OP and their Landlord, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. What the church decides to do with the building once vacated is not our business either.

I am a parent of CO-OP graduates, so I have a soft spot for the school, but the safety of the children attending the school is the most important aspect of any building that they may occupy. The CO-OP has been searching for a new location for some time. They have not been able to find a suitable location in Aurora that is within their budget.

Buildings that are being used for schools in their current condition qualify for some ADA exemptions; however, a major renovation will force compliance with many ADA standards. Oliver Hall will need major renovations to keep the building safe for the children. Anybody who has been in the building can see that maintenance is becoming difficult without a major renovation.

Maybe we should landmark this building and put a clock on top of it. How much would that cost?

    To the above suggestion….Amen!!
